Calculation question, what is better to pay off overall with consideration to tax deductions…?

April 30th, 2010

I am trying to decide what is best to start using my extra money to pay off…a student loan at 5.4%, an auto loan at 4.99% or a heloc at 7.75% I know student loans and heloc interest is tax deductible, but assuming these deductions don’t affect a change in bracket (tax rate) what is the calculated difference in interest saved (assuming 15% bracket) on whether to pay which of these three….(I guess I’ve always been told pay non-deductible first, but with these numbers I just don’t see how that adds up…and most importantly how do I actually calculate the real interest I’m paying on tax deductible interest so I can compare it to nondeductible rates…) thanks in advance for any help!

Paying my student loans (UK) and New Tax Year Deductions?

April 28th, 2010

So my parents have given me the money to pay off all of my student loans (£14.000) and i am currently working. If i pay off the student loans now, will i still be deducted in the new Tax year (April 6)

How will the HM revenue know i have paid this money off and not start deducting from my wages.

Anyone who has paid this money off, please guide me through as i don’t want to be pay it off and only to find them deducting me in the new tax year.

What are some tax deductions I might be missing out on?

April 23rd, 2010

I am a teacher and my husband is a physical therapist. Total we gross about 145K a year. I’m worried that we will be owing money this year since it was my husbands first full year in the higher paying job.

What are some tax deductions I don’t want to miss out on? I’m never sure of all the things I can claim as far as teaching expenses, medical bills, prescriptions, etc. go. I know I can take receipts for the things I buy for my classroom throughout the year but is there a cut off? Also, for medical bills and prescriptions should I have my doctors/dentists/pharmacy print out a list of everything I’ve paid them this year? I had a dental surgery in July that was over ,000. I also have student loans but I’ve heard that you can only claim a certain percentage. Last year the place we had our taxes done said my husband could only claim a VERY small amount (right around a thousand) of the ,600 he paid out to his student loan company. Is that correct?

What are some other hidden deductions we might be able to claim that we might have missed out on in the past? We have no children, just two dogs =)

Can someone explain the different education tax credits and deductions?

March 6th, 2010

I am starting my first year of school and have taken out ,000 in student loans. I am electing to pay the interest only payment on the loans, while I am in school, so the balance doesn’t increase.
Can anyone explain to me the different education tax credits that are available? Also, am I able to take a tax credit AND deduct the interest paid on my loans (We already deduct the interest on my husband’s student loans. He has been out of school for about 6 years now.) ?
Also, someone told me that I could deduct mileage for driving to school, is this true?
Any information on education related deductions and credits would be helpful, I am new at this. Thanks.

Can you please explain tax deductions in detail?

February 22nd, 2010

I get the basic gist that you don’t have to pay taxes on whatever amount you deduct. But I don’t understand how you claim deductions and what is claimable. Are tuition and student loans able to be deducted? What is a standard deduction vs an itemized deduction? Why do most people have a standard deduction and at what point would you do an itemized deduction?
What are the general tax brackets and how do they play into it?
Thanks
I am a married student and I have a bunch of student loans. My husband is the primary income earner of our household since I’m in school. We rent a house. I’m probably going to give my car to charity and sometimes we make other charitable donations.
What sort of things could I/ we claim as a deduction?

Should I bother with tax deductions? What are they?

February 20th, 2010

First, I need to explain that I’ve already heard the definition of a tax deduction- "A reduction of total income before the amount of income tax payable is calculated." (So please don’t reply with just a simple definition) What I need to know is how that affects my return. I’ve asked a lot of people and no one can give me a clear answer. I have student loans out and I need to know how (and how much) it would benefit me to claim a deduction based on the interest I paid on them last year. Will the deductions increase the amount of my return or are deductions only necessary if I think I will owe the IRS money? I’m really confused to please answer in simple layman’s terms. Pleaaaaaaaaaase, for my sanity- only answer if you really know what you’re talking about! Thanks :)

How do I calculate tax deductions?

February 17th, 2010

I am interested in learning how to calculate my own tax deductions. I have some, I know that are deductible (i.e. daycare, mileage to and from work, student loans, gas receipts). I would like to find out if there is a way that I can calculate this to see what I might be getting back from taxes. My husband is military and he and I are planning on using his mileage and gas receipts as well.

Thanks.
